     Part 79

Jack Gage felt a furious hatred for Harriet DeSoto. What has she said to Johnny now? I don't know why that woman has to make my life a living hell, but she's not going to get away with it anymore!

Alex Masters knew he was getting close. So far all the information he'd dug up on Sharon Walters Stoker led to one person - Harriet DeSoto. He quickly flipped through his file again. This time he was going to get down to the truth of matter even if he had to confront her infront of the brother who didn't know he had a half-sister.

Harriet was a mystery to the private eye. On one hand she could be sugar and sweet, on the other hand she was conniving little witch.

And what has she cooked up with Joyce Stanley? The other woman in question had become very quiet, even though she knew her daughter had a mental problem. Instead of accepting her daughter's death as a suicide, she was blaming Hank Stanley for Alicia's death.

Alex rode the elevator car down to the emergency floor. Stepping out he strode purposely towards the woman who was at the moment working at getting Roy's chart ready, and his room set up. She began to reach for the phone, she had to call Harriet to let her know about the accident that Roy had been in.

Sharon felt a pang of regret as she began to pick up the receiver. Why does mother love Roy more than me? Why won't she acknowledge to anyone that I'm her daughter? The pretty red-haired nurse dashed a tear that had come to her eye away. Trying to keep a grip on her emotions she began to dial the number when a hand took the receiver away and placed it back into it's cradle.

"Who were you going to call Sharon? Your mother?"

Panic clearly showed on Sharons features. He knows! she thought wildly as she glanced around trying to find an avenue for escape.

Alex knew from her expression that he'd struck a nerve with Sharon. "Why don't we go talk a bit," Alex commanded as he gripped her elbow tightly, leading her from the desk.

The dark-haired detective was shocked once more and his heart started again. "That was too close," Kel commented to no one in particular, as the blip on the scope began to beep again in a more stable rhythm.

"Carol, we'll need to send him up to surgery right away. He's got some internal bleeding." This never would have been this severe if he'd been using his seat belt.

Leaving the nurse to make the necessary calls Kel went off in search of the man's partner. He found the man, who seemed to be beside himself in grief.

"Detective Hutchinson?" Brackett asked as he looked down on the blonde man.

"Yes?" The detective in question looked up earnestly, hoping that Keri had been wrong about her assessment.

"Detective Starskey went into cardiac arrest, but we were able to get his heart started again. He's been bleeding internally and he has a broken arm. Right now we've got to send him up to surgery."

"Can I see him?" Hutch asked hopefully.

"I'm sorry, at the moment you can't see him. But I'll let you know as soon as he's in recovery. Although, at the moment we have to find where the bleeding is coming from and stop it. Later someone from Orthopedics will have to set that arm of his, but it will be awhile."

Hutch was clearly relieved that it sounded like Starsky was going to be okay. He looked over at the nurse, Keri. "Did you hear that, Starsky is going to be okay!"

Keri cried, but not tears of sadness. Instead they were tears of joy.

Mike Stoker was on the phone to the babysitter. He knew that Sharon had to work the late shift, and he needed to check up on Mikey. He smiled as he heard from the sitter that Mikey was sleeping soundly. He reasurred the girl that he'd be home in the morning.

Marco strode silently into the dayroom, spotting Mike on the phone. Better get it over with now, and let Mike know what I do. I don't know how this will affect him or our friendship. I just hope he doesn't slug me once I tell him.

Seeing Mike hang up the phone Marco cleared his throat, "Uh... Mike? Can I speak to you for a minute? I've got some news for you about Sharon."

Mike smiled as he thought about Sharon. She was a sweet girl and a good mother to their son. "What do want to tell me?"
