    Part 70

Macro rose from his knees and pressed his ear against the door. He couldn’t tell if Sharon was still there or not. He wasn’t sure if he should open the door. He didn’t want to go out there if she was still there. But on the other hand, she was right, he couldn’t stay in the small confines of the bathroom forever. Gingerly he unlocked the door and opened it a crack.

He peered as best as he could into the bedroom. There was no sign of Mike’s wife. Mike’s wife! He still couldn’t believe it. There was no way he could have done such a thing if he’d been in his right mind. What had happened? He remembered being at the bar but beyond that...nothing. He opened the door wider. The room was empty. Marco let go a heavy sigh of relief. Quickly he crossed to the bedroom door and closed it, locking it...just in case.

Marco turned and ran his fingers through his hair as he surveyed the disarray of the room. His clothes were strewn haphazardly about the floor. A pair of lacy panties lay on the floor next to his boxers. Marco blushed at the thought of what must have happened. He raced around the bed and opened the drawer on the night stand. Paling, he sat heavily on the bed. The drawer contained several unopened packages. He crossed himself and began praying again. As much as Marco wasn’t sure what had happened last night with Sharon, he was now a hundred percent sure that it had been done without protection. How could he ever face Mike again?

Chet had returned to the hospital to check on Johnny but he also wanted to find out what was going on with Carol. He was confused. One moment they were clicking and the next he was getting the cold shoulder. He wondered if it had anything to do with the joke about his “trust” fund. But he didn’t think that had mattered to her. He walked through the ER hopeful of finding out something. Anything to ease his mind.

Sharon hurried through the automatic doors of the ER and headed for the locker room. She only had a few minutes to change clothes before her shift began. She saw Chet hanging around the base station. There was no way to get past him without him seeing her. She shoved her hands deep in the pockets of her sweater and barged ahead with her eyes glued to the floor and tried to get past.

“Sharon?” Chet called.

“Damn,” she swore to herself. She stopped and turned to him. “What Chet?”

“Do you know if Carol is working today?” he asked in all honesty. Sharon felt a small wave of relief. At least he wasn’t asking her about Mike. She shook her head. “No Chet, I’m sorry. I just got here. Look, I’ve got to get changed for my shift,” she apologized, indicating that she couldn’t stop and chat.

“Okay. Thanks anyway,” he called after her as she continued on her way. As she disappeared from sight, Chet decided to head for the cafeteria and get something to eat or drink. He was determined that he was going to hang around the hospital today and get some answers–one way or another.
