    Part  57

Kelly Brackett heard a satisfying SMACK as his fist slammed into Mitzi's jaw, leaving her stunned as Kel wrenched the gun from her hand. Glancing quickly about, Kel spotted a lamp that had been toppled over during the struggle and ripped off the electric cord. Binding Mitzi's hands behind her back, Kel turned and barked at Douglas, "Find a phone and call the police. NOW!"

As the frightened man picked himself up from the floor and hurried out of the apartment, Kel allowed himself a moment to catch his breath as the terror of the last few minutes caught up with him. "Come on, Dix, let's get out of here and . . . Dix?" Kel felt his stomach lurch into his throat as his sight fixed on the pool of blood spreading around Dixie too still form, "My god, Dixie. No."

Kel fell once again to Dixie's side, gathering her in his arms as he applied pressure to the wound in her chest. "Dixie, wake up. Please. Say something to me. You have to be all right. Dixie, please, you have to hold on for your baby."

"Our baby." Dixie's eyes fluttered open, briefly meeting Kel's, "I saw Dr. Newman just before Mitzi kidnapped me." She stopped, struggling to catch her breath, "I'm sev-seven months pregnant, Kel. It's y-your baby."

"Okay, Johnny, just hold on, we'll be down to you in a minute." Hank called down the elevator shaft as Dwyer and Bellingham began their descent.

"Hey, John," Dwyer smothered a grin, "nice of you to hang around and wait for us."

"Ha, ha. Very funny." Johnny rolled his eyes and crossed his arms, trying to maintain as much dignity as was possible hanging upside down in elevator shaft, "Just get me the hell out of here."

"Touchy, touchy, Gage." Bellingham's voice rang with barely suppressed laughter, "I think you're letting all the attention those pretty nurse's give you rush to your head. Or is that the blood rushing to your head?"

"That's it." John ground out, "Not another word. You comedians just get me outta here."

"Hold on," Dwyer replied as he buckled a safety belt around Johnny's waist, "we'll have you out of here in . . ." He paused in mid-sentence, his expression darkening, "Hold still, Gage, wiggling around is just going to slow us up."

"I'm not wiggling." A note of alarm crept into Johnny's voice as he realized that the slight vibration he felt was coming from the cable wrapped around his leg, "Oh god, it's the cable."

Above their heads a loud snapping sound proceeded a slackening of the cable as it rushed down toward them.

Harriet's eyes snapped open and she found herself glaring up into the startled eyes of Sharon Walters. "Where's Jack?" she snapped.

"Jack?" Sharon glanced around quickly, "I don't know who . . ."

"The man on the elevator with me, you simpering little idiot." Harriet shoved Sharon aside, "Which way did he go? Tell me now."

Sharon's mouth opened and closed slowly, tears rimming her eyes as she pointed toward the stairwell.

"I don't know why I ever bothered with you." Harriet spat out with one last glare in Sharon's direction, "You've always been a disappointment to me."

"I-I-I was only trying to h-help," Sharon's eyes filled with tears as she watched the stairwell door close, "M-mother, please. I love you."

Terry Lane watch with a malicious grin as the elevator cable snapped. Dropping the metal saw he held, Terry stood and started away from the elevator shaft. "That'll teach that pretty-boy fireman to try and take my wife away from me. Now that he's gone Alica will have to take me back."

"Terry Lane, freeze!" Alex Master burst onto the hospital roof, gun held out in front of him.
