    Part 49

Dr. Andrew Jenkins Lambert flopped back against the pillows and exhaled a loud sigh. He had hoped to keep his past life a secret. He had parents and siblings who couldn't find out about this.

"You don't have to redo the blood tests. I did have a miscarriage. Kel, you're the only one who knows my secret, and you have to promise not to reveal to ANYONE what I am about to tell you."

Kel folded his arms across his chest in his customary manner, and responded quietly, "I promise. Anything you tell me falls under doctor-patient privilege."

Dr, Lambert closed his eyes before answering to get his thoughts straight. This wasn't going to be easy.

"My real name is Andrea Jenkins, and I was going through a sex change when the miscarriage occured. I didn't know know I was pregnant. You see, they put you on medication before they call Roto-Rooter and change the plumbing. I had no idea I was pregnant until it was too late. I figure it had to be the medication, or nature that caused me to lose the baby."

Kel nodded that he understood. "If you don't mind me asking, why a sex change?"

Dr. Lambert sighed. "It's simple. I never liked being a girl. I was the only daughter out of four kids. I could never run around and play with the other kids because I was the only girl on the street, and who wants a girl on their baseball team? I can't tell you how much of a relief it's been to ditch the bra. I don't know how women can wear those tourniquets all day. Eighteen hour, my foot."

After a few minutes of silence, Dr. Lambert spoke up again. "Kel, that's not the real reason. I've just been using it as an excuse. I was date-raped when I was an undergrad at Southern Cal. My attacker was never caught, and my family offered me no support whatsoever. I thought I had put it behind me until I reached medical school when I saw him in one of my classes, and had the audacity to ask me to be his lab partner.  Everywhere I went, he was there. It was almost as if I was being stalked."

Kel was riveted. He couldn't believe what he was hearing. "Go on."

"My worst fear was confirmed when he came here to do his residency a couple of months after I arrived. I couldn't get this guy out of my life. I thought changing my appearance would throw him off the trail, and it has. I've worked beside him in the treatment room, and he doesn't even know it's me. I finally have my life back after Kent Donalson, Jr. destroyed it."
