   Part 40

Harriet stormed out of Joanne's room.  What did Roy ever see in that woman?  I don't know, but I'll see to it that Roy divorces her!  Harriet smirked as she spied Roy talking with Dr. Early.

I almost had my baby boy back, after implying to him that his precious wife was having an affair with that arrogant partner of his!  Implying is so easy with Roy.

Roy noticed someone approaching from his peripheral vision as Dr. Early left. He turned and practically shouted, "Mom!" He smiled. "This is a pleaseant surprise."

Harriet smiled for the first time today, a very warm smile. "Roy!" She paused as he kissed her cheek. "It's so good to see you." At his look of confusion she went on with her explanation. "I decided to come down here to see how you were doing."

"I'm fine. Chris and Joanne are being released tomorrow..."

Harriet's smile began losing some of its brilliance. "I know, I spoke to Joanne for a moment."

Before Harriet could work more on her little plot, Roy suggested, "Why don't we go see Johnny for a moment?"

Harriet inwardly fumed.   Nothing is going right today!  She pasted her patented false smile on her face. "Let's go."

*****

Dixie, entered Joanne's room smiling brightly. "Hi," she chirped, "Doctor Brackett said it would be okay to go pay our favorite paramedic a visit."

Joanne smiled, then frowned. "How can I go while I'm still hooked to this IV?"

Dixie laughed. "Well, Kel ordered for you to be taken off that thing today."

After Dixie carefully removed the IV and catheter, she called to an orderly who wheeled in a wheel chair. Dixie helped Joanne out of her bed then into the wheel chair, and they headed down the hall to Johnny's room.

*****

Marco had met her at Rampart two months ago when he had been electrocuted that fateful day at the gas station. The station manager had been extremely sorry that he hadn't realized that Marco was working to turn the pump off. Although, it had turned out well in the end, with Marco not having any ill effects from having a live current jump through his body.

But all in all, the experience had let him meet her--the woman of his dreams, his very own little hot chiquita. Marco rolled over in his bed as a sultry "Good morning" was whispered in his ear.

Marco smiled and embraced her, "Good morning, Chiquita," he replied then planted a kiss on her lips, which she returned with every ounce of passion repayed.

Life is good, Marco thought to himself.

"Anita, I love you," he whispered in the ear of his raven-haired beauty.

"Marco, I love you too," she returned.

*****

Johnny laid in bed awake, all the memories of the past few days coming back to him. He couldn't believe that he had thought for a moment that Roy was out to get him. And Alica... how could he have been so wrong about Alica?  Why do I always fall for the weird ones?

He looked up at the sound of a knock. Dixie stuck her head in the door. "Are you ready for visitors?"

"Hiya, Dix!" Johnny smiled brightly as Dixie pushed the door open wider and wheeled Joanne into the room.

"Hi, Johnny! You're certainly looking better."

"I'm feeling better. It's great to see you !" he replied. Dixie discreetly excused herself from the room.

Soon there was another knock on the door and both heads turned as Roy and Harriet entered the room. "You're looking better, partner."

Johnny's smile broadened across his face, but he could sense an underlying undercurrent of something between Harriet and Joanne.

"Johnny," Harriet called and nodded toward the paramedic.

Johnny felt the chill from her as if he'd been blasted by an artic wind.  She really does hate me, and I get a feeling that she feels the same about Joanne.

Joanne decided that now was as good a time as any to strike. "Harriet, why don't you finally tell the truth? I know you've been lying to everyone, especially Roy. But why not finally come clean with the truth?"

Harriet's eyes narrowed in fury. "What! Why you little..." Harriet advanced on Joanne, but Roy grabbed her by the arms, holding her back.

"Joanne... Mom... What's going on?" Roy asked looking between the two women.

"Harriet's been lying to you Roy. Your father and Johnny's father is the same man. I've seen his picture, and so has Johnny."

Johnny nodded in agreement not saying a thing. He was interested in seeing how this was going to play out.

Roy really looked confused, so Johnny reached over to the small piece of furniture in the room. He pulled his wallet from the drawer and began fishing out something, which he looked at again. Then he handed it to Joanne.

Joanne's face paled, and she looked up at Harriet in disgust and dismay that the woman would be so cruel to everyone involved here. "It's true." She handed the small picture over to Roy, who took it with trembling hands.

He looked down on the face of the man in the picture. There it was, the proof he'd so desperately wanted. Proof that, yes, John Gage and Roy DeSoto we're really--truly--brothers.

Roy sat down in a chair as his knees practically gave out on him. Then he turned to face Harriet. "Why did you try to keep this a secret from me?" he asked angrily. "Why did you always tell me that my father had died?"

"Because," Harriet screamed at everyone in the room, "how would it look, to find out that the man who had fathered you went on to marry someone else and have another son--while leaving me behind with a son who never appreciated his step-father!"

"Appreciated?" Joanne snorted. "Why in the hell would Roy want to appreciate a man who came home drunk almost every night, a man he watched beat you up? He came crying to me about it all the time!" Joanne paused for a moment while gathering her thoughts.

Then she began again a little more kindly, "Harriet, you've always wanted to know why Roy and I started our life out early. Well, think about it. Why would Roy want to stay in a house where he felt he wasn't loved?"

Harriet looked up at her, and then looked over at Roy. "Roy..." She looked at her son for the first time in a long time. "Can you ever forgive me?"
