............Part
13........,
Dixie stood over the sink, patting her face with cold water. You look terrible, she told herself, as she studied her reflection in the mirror. She wiped away the smeared mascara from under her eyes and wondered how much longer she'd have to put up with this morning sickness.
Suddenly, she paused and brightened. Morning sickness only lasts through the first tri-mester...most of the time, anyway. She smiled inwardly, as she added this to her mental list of "reasons Kent Donalson couldn't possibly be the father of this baby".
The head nurse straightened her uniform and looked once again into the mirror. Hmmm...you definately have a glow about you, Dix! She smiled, feeling just a little less weary and walked out of the ladies room.

Down the hall, a miserable Johnny Gage lay in his hospital bed, unable to get the image of Joanne DeSoto out of his head. He was trying so hard to remember something...anything...about his life, but to no avail.
If I am in love with Joanne, what kind of a person does that make me? he wondered. What kind of a guy has an affair with his best friends wife?*He was just about to think that maybe he didn't want to know what a despicable person John Gage was, when another thought crossed his mind. What if it's Roy? What if he really isn't such a nice guy, after all? It could be that we're not even friends! Hell, for all I know, we don't even like each other! Why else would I be having an affair with his wife?
The more he tried to figure everything out, the more confusing it all became. Suddenly, a memory flashed into his mind. He was in an explosion, at an apartment building. A jet had crashed into the building. He remembered being unable to get up...a voice shouting to him. The last thing he saw was that person's back as they left him there, in the burning building. Johnny knew that the person who had left him there to die...was his partner, Roy.
He continued reflecting on this memory, mixing with it a little of his own speculation concerning his so-called best friend. Then a terrible thought popped into his head. What if Roy had something to do with what happened to Joanne? Maybe he's trying to kill us both?

Joanne DeSoto tried desperately to stay awake. She wanted to see her children, to make sure they were all right. She also needed to see for herself that Johnny was okay. If anything happened to any of them ...how would she ever be able to tell Roy her good news? As hard as she fought, she felt herself slowly losing her battle with consciousness.

Roy stood outside the room of his partner and supposed best friend. His jaw was set and his fists clenched in anger. He was not usually one to jump to conclusions, but this evidence was overwhelming. He wanted answers. Okay partner. Let's see what you have to say for yourself!
